The Grace Prep golf teams finished the 2019 season with strong finishes at the state tournament held at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco this week. The girls’ squad, led by junior Grace Barker, finished as state runner-up to Midland Trinity. Individually, the ladies had two members finish in the top 15 – Barker, who earned first team all-state honors with her seventh place finish, and junior Nicole Faucher who ended the tournament in 11th. Senior Sierra Scala (17th place), sophomore Layla Holsten (21st), and junior Cheyenne Mann (t-37th) completed the team. The boys finished the two-day tournament in sixth place overall. Senior Noah Flynn led the team and brought back first team all-state accolades as he finished ninth individually. Senior Clayton Phillips who finished in a tie for 17th, juniors Andre’ Nunley (28th) and Grant Chelette (31st), and sophomore Hudson Graber (38th) made up the rest of GPA’s quintet.
Congratulations to the Grace Prep Golf Team as both the boys’ and girls’ squads qualified for the state tournament for the first time in school history. The final tournament of the season will be played at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course on April 29 and 30. The boys team finished 4th in the regional tournament behind top-10 finishes from seniors Noah Flynn (4th) and Clayton Phillips (8th). The same group won the TAPPS 4A District 2 tournament last week – their first district title since 2000. The Lions swept the first three individual honors at district with Flynn capturing the individual title, followed by Phillips and junior Andre’ Nunley. Grant Chelette, a junior, finished 9th at district. Sophomore Hudson Graber is the fifth member of the squad. The girls captured 3rd place at regionals to claim their spot in the state tournament. Juniors Grace Barker and Nicole Faucher led the Lady Lions, finishing 7th and 8th respectively. The team also won its first-ever district team title with their victory in the District 2 tournament at Hidden Creek Golf Course a week ago. Barker claimed the individual district title with Faucher (5th) and senior Sierra Scala (6th) finishing in the top 10. Sophomore Layla Holsten and junior Cheyenne Mann are the other two members of the state-bound team. Good luck to the Lion golfers!
The high school baseball and golf teams celebrated their 2018 seasons with an awards ceremony recently. In addition to honoring those who received all-state honors, each team named its MVP, Christ-Like and Lion Award winners. A complete list follows. The Grace Prep boys golf team, consisting of Crue Baldwin, John Bearrie, Grant Chelette and Hudson Graber, finished 2nd in yesterday’s TAPPS 4A District 2 tournament held at Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie. Hannah Reeves placed fifth individually in the girls tournament to notch her spot in the regional competition to be played Monday, April 23 at Mansfield National Golf Club.
