Four Baseball and Basketball Players to Continue Athletics Careers

Four more Grace Prep athletes have committed to continue their athletics careers at the next level – two each in the sports of baseball and boys basketball. Teammates Kevin Pina and Garrett Vardeman will take their baseball prowess to North Lake College in Irving. The Blazers are part of the Dallas Athletic Conference and a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Pina is coming off a senior season in which he earned TAPPS District 3 first team honors with time spent at both first and third bases, as well as on the mound. This year while playing outfielder, Vardeman was named TAPPS Division III All State honorable mention, as well as District 3 Defensive Player of the Year and first team member. TAPPS 4A Boys Basketball District 3 MVP Evan McCarthy will be going to Wichita Falls where he will play for Midwestern State. MSU is a member of the NCAA Division II’s Lone Star Conference. McCarthy was integral in helping the Lions make their state championship run. His work on the court earned him all state first team honors, along with all-tournament and first team all-district accolades. Myles McCrary, a two-year member of the TAPPS 4A all-tournament team, is heading the McPherson College located in McPherson, Kansas. The Bulldogs are a member of the NAIA’s Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. This season, McCrary was named District 3 Defensive Player of the Year in addition to being named to both all-state and all-district first teams. Phillips Claims Back-to-Back State Title

Members of the Grace Prep track teams competed in the TAPPS 4A State Meet in Waco last Saturday. Kennedy Phillips won her second TAPPS 4A state shot put crown in as many seasons, besting the second place competitor by 15 inches. The sophomore earned first team all-state honors with her title. The Lions also claimed a pair second team all-state accolades with their runner-up finishes: freshman Lydia Curreri in the 1600m, and the boys’ 4x100m relay team of senior Matthew Tucker, junior Tahj Chambers, sophomore Daryn Carruthers, and senior D.J. Oats. Also competing at the meet were senior Hannah Turner (girls’ 4x100m relay), junior Rheagan Smith (girls’ 4x100m relay), sophomore Jaylah Suggs (girls’ 4x100m relay, high jump, and triple jump), and freshmen Luke Moore (boys’ 3200m) and Becca Turner (girls’ 4x100m relay)

Golf Teams Tee-Off for Success at State Tournament

The Grace Prep golf teams finished the 2019 season with strong finishes at the state tournament held at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco this week. The girls’ squad, led by junior Grace Barker, finished as state runner-up to Midland Trinity. Individually, the ladies had two members finish in the top 15 – Barker, who earned first team all-state honors with her seventh place finish, and junior Nicole Faucher who ended the tournament in 11th. Senior Sierra Scala (17th place), sophomore Layla Holsten (21st), and junior Cheyenne Mann (t-37th) completed the team. The boys finished the two-day tournament in sixth place overall. Senior Noah Flynn led the team and brought back first team all-state accolades as he finished ninth individually. Senior Clayton Phillips who finished in a tie for 17th, juniors Andre’ Nunley (28th) and Grant Chelette (31st), and sophomore Hudson Graber (38th) made up the rest of GPA’s quintet.
