Congratulations to the Grace Prep Golf Team as both the boys’ and girls’ squads qualified for the state tournament for the first time in school history. The final tournament of the season will be played at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course on April 29 and 30. The boys team finished 4th in the regional tournament behind top-10 finishes from seniors Noah Flynn (4th) and Clayton Phillips (8th). The same group won the TAPPS 4A District 2 tournament last week – their first district title since 2000. The Lions swept the first three individual honors at district with Flynn capturing the individual title, followed by Phillips and junior Andre’ Nunley. Grant Chelette, a junior, finished 9th at district. Sophomore Hudson Graber is the fifth member of the squad. The girls captured 3rd place at regionals to claim their spot in the state tournament. Juniors Grace Barker and Nicole Faucher led the Lady Lions, finishing 7th and 8th respectively. The team also won its first-ever district team title with their victory in the District 2 tournament at Hidden Creek Golf Course a week ago. Barker claimed the individual district title with Faucher (5th) and senior Sierra Scala (6th) finishing in the top 10. Sophomore Layla Holsten and junior Cheyenne Mann are the other two members of the state-bound team. Good luck to the Lion golfers!

Four Grace Prep student-athletes signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level on Wednesday. The four represented girls basketball and baseball, and will be attending three different schools. Jada Anthony, a senior guard, will continue her basketball career at Bethel College, located in North Newton, Kansas. The Threshers of Bethel are a member of the NAIA’s Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. Baseball players Jaime Mendoza and Josh Peterson are heading to Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) in Waxahachie. Mendoza, primarily a shortstop, and Peterson, a second baseman, will be competing for the Lions in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Pitcher Clayton Phillips is headed to Springdale, Arkansas where he will play for Ecclesia College. The Royals are a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association. The Grace Prep tennis squad sent two pairs of girls’ doubles teams, and a boys’ doubles team to the TAPPS 4A State Tournament held Monday and Tuesday at the Waco Regional Tennis Center. Seniors Claire Bullington and Kay Lee Sedwick made it to the championship round before falling to Apostalo and Yellitz from Austin Vertias. Their second place finish earned them Second Team All-State honors. Junior Drew Moore and freshman Luke Moore worked their way into the semifinal round of the boys’ bracket where they were defeated by Knoll and Marsh of Waco Vanguard. The brothers took home All-State Honorable Mention accolades. Sophomore Sara Gunn and freshman Caty Thompson made their first state tournament appearance, but fell to Menendez and Garcia of San Marcos Academy. Congratulations on a strong season!
