Grace Prep Lady Lions Volleyball - TAPPS 3A State Champions
The Lady Lions Volleyball team (36-9) defeated Brentwood Christian to capture their second State Championship in the last three years. This was the 17th team State Championship in Grace Prep’s 21 year history.
Seniors, Hannah Hester and Makenzee Hanna, and Sophomores, McKayla Craig and Payton Hall were selected to the all-tournament team.
Congratulations to the Lady Lions: Hannah Hester, Makenzee Hanna, Hanna Brown, Abby Keese, Ashley Alfred, Katy Duke, Destinee Williams, Shelby Thomas, Susannah Myers, Riley Beason, Emily Guess, McKayla Craig, and Payton Hall.
Hannah Hester signs with Dallas Baptist University
Grace Prep senior setter Hannah Hester signed a scholarship offer to play volleyball for the Patriots.
In her four years at GPA she was named: 1st Team All-District 3 times, District MVP 2 times, All State 3 times, State - All Tournament 2 times, and was a member of the All State Academic Team.
During Hannah's career Grace Prep won two State Championships, reached two Regional finals, and posted a district record of 46-2. She served as a team captain and has been an inspirational leader in her witness for Christ both on and off the court.
MacKenzee Hanna signs with Stephen F. Austin
Makenzee Hanna has signed to play volleyball at Stephen F. Austin University.
Makenzee helped lead the Lady Lions, by example and as a team captain, to the TAPPS 3A 2014 State Championship. She averaged over 5 kills per game for her career, including 32 kills in the TAPPS State finals match.
During her MacKenzee’s two years at Grace Prep the team never lost a District game. Both year’s she was named 1st Team All District, was twice named District Offensive Player of the Year, was a two-time member of the TAPPS All-State Team and, as a senior, was named to the All State Tournament Team.

Sandy has been coaching at Grace since 1993. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BS in education (summa cum laude), has a Texas teaching certificate, and attended graduate school at the University of North Texas. She has previously taught and coached in the Leander and Arlington ISDs. As the varsity volleyball coach here, her teams have achieved the following honors: two years at the T-CAL State Tournament; 13 years in TAPPS, eight district titles, and seven state Final Four appearances. Coach Kelm has received numerous coaching awards from newspapers, as well as TAPPS recognition. She has been named TAPPS District Coach of the Year eight times and has served as Coach of the All-Stars.
Sandy and her husband of 30 years, Randy (also a UT alumnus), have three children who are GPA alumni. Sara (‘99) is in her sixth year teaching 5th grade in Mansfield ISD and is in her fourth year of Law School at Texas Wesleyan. Zachary (‘01) is in the MD/PHD program at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. Nathaniel (‘07) is a sophomore majoring in engineering at Baylor University.
Sandy enjoys being at GPA because of the Christ-centered environment and the great parent support.
