Welcome to the Grace Prep Athletics Program
It is our hope that while students participate in athletics at Grace Prep, they will grow in many different ways as they progress through specific developmental stages of the overall athletic program. In junior high, athletes will learn the fundamentals of their sport and what it means to be a part of a team. They will participate in every game as coaches desire to see them both developing as a player and having an enjoyable experience. While winning is certainly a rewarding experience for all involved, it remains a secondary focus at the junior high level.
At the varsity level, however, we play to build character and to win championships. Players at this level can execute the fundamentals of the game on the practice and playing fields. Playing time at this level is solely at the discretion of the coach, and athletes learn to sacrifice personal ambitions for the good of the team. As our second mission pillar dictates, "GPA is committed to athletic and extra-curricular excellence that is focused on the development of Christian character." As such, we will "teach and model commitment, hard work, and discipline in athletics and life," and we "will ensure that a Christian worldview permeates every aspect of our students’ and families’ school-sponsored activities."
What does this commitment look like?
Three verses provide a model for us by which we can live out COMMITMENT, DISCIPLINE, and HARD WORK:
John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."
We push the athletes to grow in COMMITMENT by talking frequently about working for those around you, giving yourself away, and not giving up or quitting because it gets hard.
Hosea 14:9 “For the ways of the Lord are right, and the upright walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.”
DISCIPLINE is an essential component to athletics and real life. Student athletes learn a great deal from coaches who consistently hold them accountable to attendance, promptness, dress code expectations, weight room cleanliness, and locker neatness.
Proverbs 6:6 “Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.”
We must outwork our opponents with HARD WORK. Someone somewhere is preparing to beat you. A strong work ethic will carry these young men and women far in life.
We look forward to the privilege and joy it is to work with student-athletes.
To God be the glory!
